This dog is the 'chief ' of the demonstration

Between 1967-1974, there was a military dictatorship in Greece.
On 14/11/1973 thousand students from all universities
gathered inside the National Technical University
of Athens and created a radio station, the only free media of that time.
They wanted free elections and asked every citizen to help them.
The colonels' junta sent the tanks inside at
about midnight of 17/11/1973, some students were killed.
One year later, the dictatorship collapsed
and democracy came back to the place where
it was born 2.500 years ago.
Today is a celebration to the freedom ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ.
In the old building of National Technology University
we leave a flower and the children write something.
These days you will see more pictures.
The two first photos are taken 23 years ago the third one is mine.

Since ancient times Greeks have being
living in both sides of the Aegean Archipelago,
for more than two millennia before
the arrival of the Turks.
After the Turkish conquest, Greeks of Anatolia
faced centuries of ethnic cleansing and
forcible conversion to Islam.
Both sides had made many
mistakes and one of the result
of this fight was the burn of Smirni in 1922
- now the Turks called Izmir.
My grandfather and his family were Greek
who lived in Smirni and after the 'disaster'
they became refugees in Athens.
For some of Smirni refugees
the state gave them a new house (decate 1930)
Look at them now!
Most of them are empty,
some others (second photo) accomodate
our new refugees from other countries.
What a same!

It was 28 october of 1940, when the Italian
ambassador to Athens, Gratsi went to the home
of the president I. Metaxa, asked for free entrance
of the Italian forces on to Greece.
He immediately gave a negative reply
and with him the Hellenic people answered "oxi"(no).
The war began, the sirens sound, the enemy planes
flew over the skies of Greece, and
the Italian army was on Greek land.
After many fights the day of freedom
came in October of 1944.

the Parliament.
This traditional dress it is relational to
the greek revolution of 1821.
We called this guard tsolia (τσολιά).

Every morning when I open my window
I see my house's garden.
Let my explain you some things about my house:
I live on the second floor,my parents live
on the first floor and my grandmother on the groundfloor.
Are you suprised?
In Greece we usually live near our parents.
The ground floor as well as this garden,
they are constracted in 1954 by my grandfather,
it was the 5th house of Peristeri
-now Peristeri is one of the most
populate areas of Athens.

It's the title of the exchibition created by
the municipality of Athens
and gives you the answer to my last competition!
In Heraklidon street, near to the Acropolis you can find
in a 'natural size' an old neighbourhood.
The houses and the stores are copies from the
originals houses and stores of the decade 1930-1940.
Yesterday I posted a barber -shop and
today you can see a drug-store and a hat store.

Marathon.

Marathon is the site of the battle of Marathon
in 490 BC in which the Athenian army
defeated the Persians.
This beach is the cost were the ships of the Persians anchored.
A legentary run of a messanger named Phidipides
from Marathon toAthens,
after the battle formes the basis for the modern-day marathon race.
The messanger when he arrived in Athens
he shouted 'NEKIKAMEN' (we were victorius) and died.
When I was a child, I was very touched by this story.

Tinos red carpet.

And now I have the answer that you are waiting...
This red carpet begins from the port of the Tinos island
and terminates at the big church of the island dedicated to Madonna.
The icon of the church it is thaumaturge and many people visit the
island for a pray to the Madonna.
The believers crawl on their kness ...
All the pavement it is decorated with pebbles on a beach and this work is
done by the locals artists.
Tinos except from the churches it has an old famous art school.

Me and my camera , we apologise for our photoblog absence but we were very busy these days as we are going holidays (not with this boat ). We are going to visit Paros , an island close to Athens (3 hours by boat) and a lovely place that combines everything. This is a taste of Paros from my previous visit on May. This palm tree decorate the pavement of Panepistimiou street .Panepistimiou street is a main street that leads in Omonoia square .
There is a very sad story about palm trees in Athens :
at the previous century (1920 -1925 ) our goverment had decided to uproot many palm trees , because this tree brings back exotic countries and they didn't want to consider Greece as an exotic place !

A different Botero .

This summer it is dedicated to Botero , as the National Gallery and the Concert Hall exchibit his fine work .I saw his paints only by coffe -table books and believe me it is not enough...
I went to the National Gallery and I found his whimsical depiction of rotund people , the caracteristic of his paints that gives them a pleasant comic quality.But I found something else , something different , I saw a Botero with a radical change I am talking about his latest series of 50 drawings and paintings depicting the torture of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib (second photo ) and I was socked.
His work is very powerfull don't miss !

This is villa Galini. Galini stands for calmness. This is the place were the 1963 Nobel Prize winner in Literature Giorgos Seferis used to spend his time away from the urban 'noise', devoting himself in Literature and Poetry. This house is located at the beach Neorio close to the port of Paros.
